Gröna Lund Amusement Park, Stockholm

Sweden
Amusing lights

Amusement parks are gradually reopening everywhere in Europe, proof that we are slowly getting back to the brighter (and lighter) side of life. This summer, thousands of adrenaline fans will be able to enjoy the Gröna Lund attractions also by night, thanks to a newly installed LED lighting system.

Located on the seaward side of Djurgården Island in Stockholm, Gröna Lund can be considered the oldest amusement park in Sweden, as it was initially founded in 1883 on a city area traditionally dedicated to carousels and other kinds of open-air entertainment. The park's location is unique as it was built around existing old residential and commercial structures dating back to the 19th century. It was then gradually updated with new, modern attractions starting from the ‘80s. Gröna Lund features now over 30 attractions, such as the tunnel of love, a funhouse and 7 roller coasters. It is also a popular summer venue for rock and pop concerts. The capacity record of the park is still held by a concert of Bob Marley and the Wailers, who attracted 32,000 people in 1980, although the performances of Abba, Sting, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Idol and many more are unforgettable.

An 80m tall tilting drop tower needed a very specific lighting system, illuminating the entire structure from the base to enhance its imposing height. Opened in 1998, Fritt Fall is a stomach-churning, tilting drop tower where you hurl towards the ground at the terrifying speed of 100 km/h. The view from the top is undoubtedly amazing, the screams during the drop echo all over town in loop during the summer opening. To reach the stunning height of the tower, powerful long shot beams of light were required from relatively compact fixtures that could be easily hidden at the base of the structure without interfering with its functioning.
Our Swedish distributor, Fox Belysning AB, have specified the powerful lighting fixtures capable of reaching the top of the attraction in a flawless way: Powershine MK2 S in RGBW colour configuration with a 12° narrow optics and Onyx US RGBW with an ultra spot optics of 4.4°. To work in perfect synergy, they have been installed in mixed couples on sturdy supports to reach the top of the tower with dynamic colour changing effects. The result is amazing as they cover the whole tower with a seamless distribution. Specific for architectural projects demanding for impressive though sustainable lighting performance, ONYX features an incomparably functional, ultra-spot, sharp, long-shot beam of light capable of reaching previously unthinkable distances with amazing precision and even light distribution. Now replaced by its updated version Capital 300, Powershine MK2 S has been for a long time our company’s trademark fixture. This luminaire is the ideal solution for dramatic illumination of large scale façades and high-rise buildings, as well as many other imposing architectural structures, with applications ranging from wall washing to architectural elements distinctive enhancement.
