Bunyodkor Stadium, Tashkent

Uzbekistan
The lately built Bunyodkor Stadium was inaugurated at the end of August in conjunction with the celebration of the 21st Uzbekistan’s Independence Day, recurring on September, 1st 2012. On this occasion, Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, has been enlivened for several days by numerous sports events, folk shows, musical happenings and craft fairs enhanced by amazing fireworks and breathtaking city lighting. As a part of this newly conceived metropolitan illumination concept, the Bunyodkor stadium - now the biggest sports facility in Uzbekistan giving home to the local football team - demanded a well-framed lighting plan that would be able to overcome the many structural obstacles this pioneering arena involved.

Supported by 64 columns, the three-dimensional sail-like canopies that embellish the entire exterior perimeter of this bowl-shaped stadium, were identified as a core element and therefore chosen as main lighting attractive of the whole structure. According to the appointed lighting designers, sails and columns had to be enhanced by perfectly even colour shades, smoothly cross-fading in a faultless alternation of soft pastel hues and matching tones. They also had to stand out from the background walls of the stadium thus offering a further element of optical contrast. Prerequisite for a sustainable perceived layout was the use of cutting edge LED lighting fixtures, dimmable and individually manageable via a wireless DMX control system. Consequently, the final result had to be reached by a remarkable number of lightweight, compact fittings capable of reproducing dynamic lighting patterns in perfect synchrony and displaying individual or combined colour sequences. Being able to deliver the specified material in a record time, GRIVEN was chosen as official lighting provider for this challenging project by the installation company winner of the tender, the Uzbek company FV Asia Denkriser. Almost 500 LED lighting fixtures by GRIVEN were installed at the Tashkent stadium in order to achieve the desired result.

64 units of DUNE MK2 were embedded at the base of each column in order to light them up till the junction point with the protruding canopies. DUNE MK2 is a highly performing LED colour changer specifically designed for exterior recessed applications. Based on a combination of RGBW LEDs, it offers an unprecedented astonishing white light output quality as well as a wider variety of intermediate colour hues. Moreover, a 2000 Kg deadweight load capacity makes this IP67 rated colour changer suitable for ground mounting applications even in vehicled areas.
Owing to their three-dimensional shape, the 64 sail-like canopies needed to be lit up by differently located fixtures, in order to reach the required uniformity of tones and light output. Capable of delivering a remarkable performance from an extremely compact unit, ZAPHIR RGBW was successfully employed to enhance this core part of the stadium. 2 units were positioned at the top and 2 at the base of each canopy, while 1 unit was located as backlighting behind each sail, thus requiring a total of 5 units to illuminate a single canopy. A total number of 320 ZAPHIR RGBW colour changers were therefore used for the specific lighting of these elements. Owing to a comprehensive selection of optics groups, ZAPHIR RGBW is suitable for a variety of lighting installations which require maximum photometric flexibility. Its capacitive touchscreen display allows a direct access to all on-board functions. Moreover, the full digital control system, obtainable from any five-channel remote DMX512 control desk, includes stand alone functions implemented by pre-configured colour sequences and Master-Slave mode for multiple units synchronization.

Offering an unforgettable aerial view of the stadium by night, 32 POWERSHINE S RGBW units were distributed all around the top edge of the bowl to illuminate its partial roofing. 64 DMX receivers and 4 DMX transmitters were specified to obtain an optimal wireless digital control of the whole lighting equipment. The DMX radio signal receivers are available as separate IP65 rated units to be externally applied to the lighting fixture or they may come as an integrated on board system, depending on the site conditions and the lighting equipment utilized. The advanced technology wireless DMX signal transmitter units handle all 512 DMX channels with a maximum frequency of 250Kpbs and have a typical outdoor transmission of 700m. Supporting frequency selection flexibility to avoid interference conflicts with adjacent similar devices running different programmes and other radio spectrum users, both these dynamic devices are built in accordance with CE standards and are supplied with legal signal frequency management.

The smart combination of all the GRIVEN "top players” has allowed the team to achieve an impressive final result: a well scored goal!
