Ferrein’s Pharmacy, Moscow

Ferrein’s Pharmacy, Moscow

Russia
Built in 1832 and renovated at the end of the nineteenth century, this elegant building featuring Neo-renaissance and Baroque elements is renowned for hosting Moscow’s oldest pharmacy - the Ferrein’s Pharmacy - for over a century. Ferrein’s Pharmacy worked as a drugstore and a laboratory where extensive analytical and chemical research experiments on various pharmaceutical disciplines were officially carried out according to a decree of Peter the Great which promoted the development of private chemist business in the struggle against harmful medicines. Renamed Pharmacy №1 when the Ferrein family had to leave Moscow at the beginning of World War 1, the pharmacy on Nikolskaya Street has successfully worked from 1917 until 2000, carrying on this ancient tradition till the present days.

This historic building has been hosting since February 2008 Moscow's Baccarat House boutique where the sparkling Baccarat collections, from shining chandeliers to precious house décor ornaments, are permanently on display. Located on the second floor of this magnificent mansion, the Baccarat Crystal Room is a top class restaurant serving delicious meals of French cuisine on the world's finest dishware. Philippe Starck has preserved the original allure and elegance of the interior halls, while delivering them an unmistakable touch of modernity.

As a dominant element of the building, the façade reflects in its different decorative elements the building’s eclectic style, revealing a perfect architectural symmetry among its levels. On ground floor four massive square pillars support the whole building geometry, leaving the main scene to a central entrance and two side windows. On the superior level the columns become thinner and lighter, while the large and tall Venetian glass windows let the sunlight flow in to create magnificent visual effects skillfully used by Philippe Starck in the interior rooms. The rhythm of the façade further grows while reaching the top of the building, enhanced by semi-circular arches that crown the windows and statues that overlook the columns. On the attic level the windows triple, becoming the logic conclusion of a skyward pointing design. A turret with a clock stand high above the building becoming a dominant characteristic of the mansion. With its large halls decorated with gilded vases, carved oak cabinets, chandeliers and statues, Ferrein’s Pharmacy has been the largest and most renowned laboratory in Europe for a long time.

Within a recent renovation plan of Moscow city centre, a new lighting concept has been developed for the Ferrein’s Pharmacy. The appointed lighting designers have deliberately abandoned the previous colour changing scheme, choosing an elegant 4000K white light color temperature that perfectly blends with the classic architectural style of the building, its texture and colour to restore and bolster its original appearance.
In order to enhance the peculiar architectural features of this façade, linear LED modules of the PARADE S series by GRIVEN have been employed in a RGBW version that allows to obtain the required shade of white, while leaving the possibility of selecting a dynamic colour changing mode on special occasions or festivities. A total of 112 PARADE S-RGBW with 20, 40 or 60 LEDs and elliptical optics configuration have been installed on the façade aiming towards the top of the building. The modules have been supplied in a Polar Edition, featuring an integrated de-icing system with electrically heated glass, which assures a comfortable functioning even in the utmost severe cold weather conditions. The Polar version involves the use of a built-in intelligent automatic system capable of removing ice or snow from the fixtures, significantly simplifying the operation of the lighting system during the cold season.

PARADE S is a modular and adjustable super flux, high luminance bar featuring 20, 40 or 60 RGBW, warm, cold or dynamic white LEDs grouped in clusters of 4 LEDs each. Superb output with real uniform coverage even on close-up installations is provided by the newly conceived elliptical and elliptical wide optics specifically designed for true wall washing effect. The powerful luminous flux tops the standard range of similar products available on the market. The combination of RGBW LEDs offers an unprecedented astonishing white light output quality, as well as a wider variety of intermediate colour hues for an even broader range of application purposes. The pure white light spectrum intensity management obtainable from the Dynamic White configuration, that adds up to the cool or warm white temperature LEDs set-ups also available, creates a stunning visual rendering of warm tones, natural hues and cool shades altogether allowing the maximum lighting design flexibility.
