Geometries of Light

Italy
Located at Corso Europa 22 in Milan, this building, owned by a real estate fund, is dedicated to commercial and office spaces, attracting prominent tenants. Spanning across 2,400 square meters and rising seven stories above ground with an 8th floor coming soon, it occupies a prime location in the heart of the city, close to San Babila and the Duomo. The area is currently undergoing redevelopment, drawing keen interest from institutional investors due to its proximity to various amenities.

Designed by architect Vico Magistretti in the late 1950s, the building has recently undergone extensive renovations, including upgrades to its systems and common areas, as well as a thorough cleaning and enhancement of its exterior façade.

The edifice's architectural charm lies in its original façade, characterized by a harmonious interplay of solids and voids created by windows and polished white granite slabs, accentuated by exposed pillars. The façade's geometry is defined by seven vertical pillars and horizontal divisions of aluminum windows, deviating from the conventional 'curtain wall' design prevalent in 1950s commercial buildings. This deliberate departure maximizes the façade's utility while transforming it into an elegant and visually striking feature, serving as the defining aesthetic element of the entire streetscape.
According to the selected lighting design, the original geometry of the building’s façade required a balanced alternation of lines of bright white light to ensure eye-catching effects all over its surface. To achieve this, the ultra-compact linear profiles of the nanoPARADE series were chosen for their extreme thinness and optimal performance. Fitted with a separate power supply unit, nanoPARADE is the ideal solution for easy outdoor installation on balconies, windows, or façades, where a reduced mounting space drastically limits the range of suitable products.

Selected in two different lengths – 620 mm and 1220 mm – and in a tunable white configuration ranging from 2300K to 8000K, they have been installed on the different textures of the building’s surface with the help of dedicated fixing brackets. The obtained light pattern follows the building's architecture with its interplay of solid elements and empty spaces through alternating short and long elements in a crossing pattern. Now, its geometric arrangement is elegantly highlighted by horizontal lines of light, delivering a new identity to the surrounding area at night. To complete the lighting scheme, several MOON WALLs, in tunabe white configuration, were installed on the cross-section framing the first floor facing downwards to illuminate the entrances of the shops occupying this area.

Featuring on-board electronics with independent control of one-foot-long pixel clusters, nanoPARADE can be easily managed via RDM or DMX for the creation of eye-catching lighting shows through the dynamic rendering of any graphic pattern or animation. The selected tunable white version allows the creation of amazing visual renders in changing hues of white.
