A far-reaching wave

Vietnam
First built during the French colonial period, Rao Bridge was destroyed and reconstructed many times in the course of history. After over 30 years, the 1989 release of this important infrastructure,  considered in the whole country as one of the main symbols of Hai Phong, was deteriorated and could no longer meet the increasing traffic demands of the busy Vietnamese city. In October 2020, Hai Phong City People's Committee kicked off the investment project to build a new bridge which was completed at the beginning of 2022 to deliver to the growing city a modern, large-scale structure capable of helping people travel more conveniently.

Connecting 6 main arteries, Rao 1 Bridge is located on the most important intersection in Hai Phong city, which has also been renovated with modern roundabout ramps to keep up with the new architectural layout and traffic capacity of the bridge. Spanning the Lach Tray River, Rao 1 Bridge shows now a cutting-edge, attractive architecture in the shape of a far-reaching wave embodying Hai Phong’s aspiration to an economic development associated with the sea.

Made up of steel and prestressed reinforced concrete, the main bridge is about 456.5m long, 30.5m wide and includes 3 steel arches of different size, and 11 spans hosting 6 lanes, 4 of which for motor vehicles and 2 for mixed traffic. It is also fitted with sidewalks on both sides. The top part of the main central arch is decorated with the inlaid image of three phoenix flowers, whose petal’s total number corresponds to the number of Hai Phong districts. As Hai Phong is named "The City of Phoenix Flower”, these decorations show the deep interconnection of the bridge with the city’s tradition and culture.

Right before its official inauguration, the bridge was required a gorgeous illumination that could enhance its elegant profile with an artistic game of synchronous lights.  Conceived and fulfilled by PhuThanh JSC, leading company in the installation of LED technology in Vietnam, the lighting scheme of the bridge aims at illuminating its arches with a dynamic colour changing effect, enhancing also its structural intersection with a bright colourful illumination.

Allowing the screening of low resolution video file and graphic patterns, 3570 units of Graph-i-Dot RGB have been installed at a very close distance, owing to their easy pixel pitch adjustment, on the vertical cables of the three arches of both sides of the bridge for an ultra luminous spot light performance. Powerful Capital 300 enhance in matching colours the outer profiles of the arches waves, while units of Jupiter with narrow or wide optics illuminate the pilons from the top.

To complete the illumination of this imposing project, an array of almost 800 Parade L3 in RGBW colour configuration with extra wide optics have been installed on the lower borders of the elevated ramps to enliven them with bright colours. The city of Hai Phong enjoys a "wow-inspiring” lighting coupled with a rare masterpiece of functional architecture, a far-reaching wave of colours interconnecting earth and sea through a symbolic flower.
