Located on Palm Tree Island
right in front of Doha, the official logo of 2022 FIFA World Cup has been the
brillant "star” of the football competition and will be shining for a whole
year at night as a reminder the 22nd edition of the world championship. This
three-dimensional curved structure offers a diverse visual shape and emotional
impact to the viewer walking along the Doha Corniche, which makes it an absolutely
unique artwork. Imposingly standing on a sand
dune as if by miracle, the 26.5 m high sculpture was conceived to represent this
international event through typical elements of the Arabic world and culture
mixed with references to the sports event. Its
soft curves recall the desert dunes while its unbroken loop portrays both the
number eight – a reminder of the eight astonishing stadiums that hosted the matches
– and the infinity symbol, which represents by the way the official 2D graphic
layout of this world championship. Besides echoing the shape of the FIFA World
Cup Trophy, this 150
tons sculpture made up of steel and fiberglass takes
inspiration from the traditional woollen shawls, usually fitted with embroidered details, worn in the Arabic and Gulf regions
in winter.

This
asymmetric structure was meant to draw the attention of the many football supporters
and city visitors at night through a seamless illumination that could enhance,
in either white or coloured light, its sinuous contours with a brilliant,
intense light. According to dedicated lighting calculations, 46 units of
Capital 300 with either medium or wide optic in RGB+W 4000K colour
configuration, were required to deliver the desired illumination level to the
whole structure. The CAPITALs 300 were fixed in groups onto metal supports installed
on the ground around this giant O, to light it up with the same intensity from
every point of view. Owing to the proximity to the sea, the fixtures were
fitted with an additional anti-saline treatment, a specific corrosion resistant
coating for product installation in coastal environment which protects the
fixtures prolonging their lifetime. The whole system is managed via a professional
DMX control system ideal for medium to large-sized projects, which operates as
an interface for the user allowing easy access and control over all available
functions.
The
bright, intense illumination of the 2022 World Cup symbol perfectly reflects
the bold and modern image that Qatar wanted to deliver to the world on the
occasion of this prestigious sports event through this and many other
futuristic constructions, like the four Lusail Plaza Towers, specifically designed
and built on this occasion.
