WAVING PATTERNS
France
A cultural institution of the French town of Marseilles, the Regional
Archives and Library are dedicated to the former mayor and renowned politician Gaston
Defferre. Built in 2006 to replace the old regional library centre of the
Bouches-du-Rhône department dating back to 1945, the new multifunctional
building was meant to offer larger and better organized spaces to Marseilles
citizens.
Allowing easy access to culture to a wider audience, nowadays the
library organizes a wide range of events, workshops, seminars, and shows, besides
the regular promotion of exhibitions of every kind. Also become a place for
exchanges and meetings owing to its modern facilities, the library’s main
mission is to encourage local players in the book chain, such as writers,
illustrators, and editors, to give loud voice to their creativity.

Soon after its construction, the complex had been illuminated by the famous
Japanese lighting designer Keiichi Tahara, leading player on the world stage in
various artistic fields such as photography, video making, and architecture. He
developed the lighting design of the Marseilles library, named "Ode a la
Mediterranee," inspired by the idea that the light should become one with
the illuminated object. The light reflections on the building were meant to
reproduce the three elements sea, sky, and wind stratified in different layers,
blending nature with architecture through the use of light.
Within a recent requalification programme, the Lighting designer Guillaume
Sarrouy
of G.S.L Conception Lumière, supported by the provider FOX
S.L.V, has
been appointed with the revamp of the original illumination concept of the
whole building. G.S.L Conception Lumière carries out services relating to architecture, events, or shows, from
light&video production or sound design to project support, including
technical management, design concept, and training. Besides
delivering a splash of coloured light to the structure, Sarrouy wanted to
emphasize the outside walls of the complex with dynamic images of light and
water. 15 GoboLED 500 units located in strategic areas, have been used to reproduce
a realistic water waving effect as well as an artistic light reflecting pattern
onto different areas of the structure, delivering a deep emotional impact at
night. Now the imposing building looks lighter and modern, attracting the
attention of the by-passers with its eye-catching design.
