South Korea - A big OH for The Big-O!

Taking place from May 12 to August 12 in the newly renovated port area of Yeosu (South Korea), Expo 2012 - the first-ever international fair held on water - has provided the opportunity to enhance the significance of oceans and coasts, recognizing the need for a worldwide cooperation to rescue the marine environment. Among the four facilities illustrating the Yeosu Expo 2012 themes, focused on preservation and sustainable development of oceans and coastal areas, The Big-O, along with its amazing performance, definitely represents the undisputed highlight of the whole exhibition centre. Owing to its huge success, the so-called Big-O Experience show has been transformed into a permanent spectacle further enriched by new special effects and audio-visual surprises.

Evoking the story of a girl that discovers the ocean and its wonderful creatures, the Big-O Experience is entirely performed by an over 40 meters high O-shaped device set on a floating stage, capable of lighting explosive fires, spraying seawater jets and spreading bright beams of different colours in many directions, while displaying a proper motion picture  on a water screen. The Big-O borrows its shape from the letter 'O' of ocean, recalling the origins of life from water, and from the number '0' symbol of endless perfection. A message of peace, cooperation and hope lies behind the story of the little girl that tries and shows us the way to preserve the water world from the devastating actions of mankind.

Allowing an amazing performance right above the water level, the circular structure of the Big-O is equipped with 58 moving heads, 5 lasers, 24 water jets, 24 flame outlets and 6 image projection systems. Installed on the surrounding platforms, 12 units of GRIVEN’s POWERSHINE MK2 D RGBW with narrow, medium and wide optics build up a widely diffused colourful background that further enhances, with its vibrant hues, the choreographies displayed onto the water and smoke screens of The Big-O show. POWERSHINE MK2 D RGBW, using a total of 192 powerful RGBW LEDs, is a double cluster configuration LED wall washer with full independent digital control of each LED bank. It is available with a vast choice of interchangeable optics for the maximum lighting design flexibility. Moreover, a smart combination of RGBW LEDs provides an unprecedented astonishing white light output quality, as well as a wider variety of intermediate colour hues for an even broader range of application purposes.
While in the daytime The Big-O is a giant sculpture that stands as the landmark of Expo 2012, by night it still remains the centerpiece of a unique show that embraces all the Expo’s themes, launching its message of hope to a steadily growing audience.
